On the same night LaVar Ball showed up for a now-infamous appearance on Chris Cuomo’s CNN show, Stephen Colbert kicked off Monday’s edition of “The Late Show” with a discussion of Ball’s bizarre feud with President Trump.
The two have been going at it since last week, when Ball’s youngest son, UCLA basketball player LiAngelo Ball was arrested along with three other players for shoplifting while the team was in the city of Hangzhou, China. After the three players were released, Donald Trump said he personally asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to intervene, and complained on Twitter that the players were insufficiently grateful.
When asked about Trump’s commment by ESPN, LaVar Ball’s response was a blunt: “who?” This outraged Trump further, and POTUS on Sunday slammed Ball and said about his son and classmates that “I should have left them in jail!”
After describing the beef, Colbert said “Well, say what you will about Donald Trump, and I do, but he is the president and ultimately far above responding to a publicity-hungry troll.”
“I”m just kidding,” Colbert continued, adding “Mr. Trump, I know you’re upset, but maybe now’s not the best time to be implying that someone’s kid should go to jail for what their dad did.”
