Casey Affleck was a guest on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Monday night, but as soon as the actor sat down, the exchange got fairly awkward — and even tense.
“Thanks for dressing up!” Colbert said as Affleck sat down in slacks and a blazer. His comment sparked a debate on who was being rude, with Colbert defending himself saying, “it’s just some playful ribbing.”
The conversation shifted to the water mug on the desk, with yet another awkward exchange about whose mug it was and what was in it.
“It’s just water. Did you want something else but water?” asked Colbert. But then, the conversation pivoted back to Affleck’s looks.
“It’s not a joke, you really look like a street-corner Jesus,” added Colbert.
When Colbert complimented Affleck on his stellar performance in “Triple 9,” which opens this Friday and was the movie Affleck was promoting during his appearance on “The Late Show,” Colbert probably sensed the tense situation.
“It’s suddenly going so well,” said Affleck.
“I don’t know why, we should probably end up fighting at the end of this,” responded Colbert.
“You want to fight me?” Affleck asked back, to which Colbert responded, “I feel like this is where this is going!”
Awkward laughs ensued, but the rest of the interview went pretty smoothly as the duo talked about the other talent, such as Norman Reedus, Kate Winslet and Anthony Mackie, in “Triple 9.”
