ABC has offered George Stephanopoulos the post of co-anchor on “Good Morning America,” according to the Washington Post, and is in negotiations with him.
Stephanopoulos would fill the chair being vacated Dec. 11 by Diane Sawyer, who starts anchoring ABC’s "World News Tonight" on Dec. 21. She’s replacing Charles Gibson, whose last newscast will be Dec. 18.
Network executives are negotiating with Stephanopoulos, anchor of ABC’s Sunday morning show “This Week” and ABC’s chief Washington correspondent, about the terms, according to people familiar with the situation.
In a meeting this week Disney-ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney, ABC News President David Westin reportedly said Stephanopoulos was his choice for the post, according to the Los Angeles Times..
People knowledgeable about the process said there is not yet a deal in place.
