“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Stephanie Beatriz is the latest addition to the cast of the movie musical “In the Heights,” with producer Lin-Manuel Miranda announcing the remainder of the cast Tuesday.
Beatriz will play Carla and she’s joined by Daphne Rubin-Vega as Daniela and Dascha Polanco as a new character named Cuca.
On Monday, Olga Merediz, who plays Beatriz’s mother on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” also joined the cast as Abuela Claudia. Miranda made a cameo appearance in the latest season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” as Amy Santiago’s brother.
Jon M. Chu is directing the film adaptation based on Miranda’s play that he co-wrote with Quiara Alegría Hudes. He directs a cast that includes also Corey Hawkins, Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Gregory Diaz IV and Jimmy Smits.
“In the Heights” follows a bodega owner in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood who has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after inheriting his grandmother’s fortune.
“In the Heights” had originally been set up at The Weinstein Company. However, Hudes and Miranda regained control of the film rights following the company’s downfall following the sexual assault and harassment accusations against Harvey Weinstein, and TWC’s subsequent bankruptcy. Warner Bros. won an intense bidding war for the rights to the musical.
Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman, Mara Jacobs are also producing. David Nicksay, Jill Furman, Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller are executive producing.
Beatriz’s film credits include “The Lego Movie 2,” “Half Magic” and “Short Term 12.” She also voices a character on “BoJack Horseman.”
