The force is not sure what to make of this idea: Lucasfilm is planning an animated comedy based on the "Star Wars" universe, with "Robot Chicken" producers Seth Green and Matthew Senreich attached to produce.
Brendan Hay ("The Daily Show") is writing, while Jennifer Hill will produce and Todd Grimes will direct, according to a release from Lucasfilm. This, of course, assumes the project moves to series and lands a network buyer, neither of which has happened yet.
Cartoon Network, which has produced the "Clone Wars" spinoff of "Star Wars," would be a logical home. But if the show is interesting or broad enough, why wouldn’t Fox Broadcasting take a look at the idea for its Sunday night Animation Domination block?
Lucasfilm and News Corp. have played well together in the past, obviously.
Our dream scenario has "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane getting pulled into the project, though Lucasfilm might not be willing to give its blessing to the twisted take MacFarlane might imagine. That said, the studio has been OK with previous "Family Guy" parodies of "Star Wars." The "Robot Chicken" dudes have also successfully spoofed the "Star Wars" universe before.
So what’s the thrust of the new project?
“There are so many stories taking place in the ‘Star Wars’ universe, and they don’t all have to focus on the fate of the galaxy,” Grimes said. “We’re looking at ‘Star Wars’ from a new perspective; this will be a glimpse at how the rest of the galaxy is affected by the events of the Saga. There’s a lot of humor to be mined from that.”
Green, meanwhile, said the "Star Wars" galaxy of characters "is so dense and rich. It’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined. And it’s even crazier to think of what those problems might be, since it’s all set in a galaxy far, far away. What do these characters do when they’re not overthrowing empires?"
And Senreich suggested the new show, like "Clone Wars," will work on multiple levels.
"It’s going to appeal to all ages, the way ‘Star Wars’ should – but there’ll be plenty buried under the surface, as well," he said. "As Obi-Wan might say, ‘It all depends on your point of view’.”
TheWrap noted that a humorous take on the "Star Wars" saga was in development last month.
