Hollywood celebrated the best in motion picture marketing at the 17th Annual Golden Trailer Awards in Beverly Hills, California, on Wednesday night. More than 1,100 studio marketing executives, celebrities, trailer editors and movie fans were on hand as Open Road Films and InSync + BeemisBalkind’s work on “Spotlight” won the Best of Show Prize and the top honor for Best Independent Trailer.
While the Golden Trailer Awards bestow trophies in 92 different categories (see the full list below), only 16 were handed out live before a sold-out crowd at the Saban Theater. To view a selection of the winning trailers, click here.
Warner Bros. (along with New Line Cinema) was the big winner of the night, taking home 11 Golden Trailers overall. Fox and Disney each won a total of 10 statues, while Universal took home nine and Lionsgate earned eight. Top creative vendors in the 2016 race included LA, whose print campaigns and posters were honored in nine different categories. Best trailer vendors for 2016 included Create Advertising Group and Mark Woolen & Associates, each of whom won five GTAs. Aspect, AV Squad, Buddha Jones, Trailer Park and Zealot took home four trophies a piece.
“The Jungle Book” was the top GTA winner of the night by film winning awards in a total of four categories.
Wayne Brady served as host and master of ceremonies of the spirited show, while celebrity presenters included Ed Asner, David Koechner (“Anchorman”), David Dastmalchian (“Ant-Man”), Heather McDonald, Nichole Bloom (“Superstore”), Tito Ortiz and Los Angeles Clippers player Wes Johnson, among others. Celebrity and industry judges participating in this year’s ceremony included Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (“The King Speech”), “Deadpool” director Tim Miller, “Horrible Bosses” director Seth Gordon, Oscar-nominated editor Mary Jo Markey, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” editor Maryann Brandon, Woody Allen‘s longtime editor Alisa Lepselter, Poverty Inc. director Michael Miller, “CSI: Miami” actress Khandi Alexander, “Awkward” actress Molly Tarlov, Advertising Hall of Fame honoree Linda Kaplan Thaler and Marvel Studios’ executive VP of physical production Victoria Alonso.
The Golden Trailer Awards were launched in 1999 by Evelyn Watters and Monica Brady as a way to recognize the best of the best in worldwide motion picture and television marketing.
“The Golden Trailer Awards recognizes the best and brightest in the fascinating world of movie trailers. The media and marketing landscape for motion pictures in today’s digital world has become incredibly complex, yet trailers remain the single most important tool to open a movie, as they have since the 1960s when trailers first emerged as an art form,” Watters said. “One night per year, the tireless efforts and innovations of the artists who cut these two minutes of movie magic are recognized for their craft. We couldn’t prouder of tonight’s nominees and winners.”
“Once again, we had more contest submissions this year than any year in our 17 year history and we keep growing in stature and size. The best is yet to come for the Golden Trailer Awards,” added executive producer Brady.
