Sony will re-release "The Social Network" into 600 theaters on Jan.7, as the studio seeks to up the movie's profile in front of the Oscar nominations later this month.
The theatrical re-release will be followed four days later by the movie's DVD debut, with promotion for both offering Sony a means to remind awards voters about a movie that originally premiered all the way back in September.
Sony officials note that the re-release also gives the film a chance to surpass the $200 million mark globally, with film grossing $93 million domestically and $104 million internationally.
"At the box office, this film showed true staying power, grossing more than four times its opening weekend gross — a rare accomplishment when the average for wide releases last year was below three times its opening weekend gross," noted Jeff Blake, chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution for Sony.
