Sony Pictures Gets North American Rights to ‘Life, Above All’

Film tells the story of girl growing up in South African village

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American rights to "Life Above All" from Munich based world sales company Bavaria Film International, the studio announced on Monday.

The film was an official selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The film was previously sold to ARP for France and Nachshon for Israel with Senator handling German speaking Europe.

Directed by Oliver Schmitz ("Paris Je T’aime") the film is based on the 2005 novel Chanda's Secrets by Allan Stratton. It centers on a young girl in South Africa who is ostrachized by her small community after a series of tragedies befall her family.

Sony and Bavaria have collaborated in the past, with the independent studio distributing such Bavaria films as "Run Lola Run," "Good Bye, Lenin," and "I Served the King of England."

“I am exceedingly happy that Sony Pictures Classics is releasing 'Life Above All' in North America. I have always admired their unfailing ability to honor cinema at its best and really look forward to working with them. I am very proud of 'Life Above All' and especially my ever so talented young actors. May audiences everywhere open their hearts to them!” Schmitz said in a statement
