‘Shutter Island’ Scares Up DVD Sales and Rentals

“From Paris With Love” also debuts strongly, while “Alice” shows legs

“Shutter Island,” the latest Martin Scorsese/Leonardo DiCaprio thriller had a frightfully strong DVD debut, but still found itself bested by Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and John Travolta’s “From Paris With Love” on the sales and rentals charts.

In its second week of release, “Alice” was the top-selling disc and the third most rented film, according to Rentrak data. “From Paris,” was a box office welterweight, grossing a mere $51 million worldwide on a $52 million budget, but managed to take first place on the rental chart.

In anticipation of “Toy Story 3”s’ big-screen release on Friday, tricked out editions of the first and second films in the franchise climbed up the charts to be the week’s eight and ninth best-selling DVDs.

This week brings the release of Denzel Washington’s dystopian action movie “The Book of Eli” and the critically praised, popularly ignored “Youth in Revolt.”
