Shanghai Disney visitors were instructed to remain on lockdown at home and test for COVID again on Tuesday after being shut inside the park the previous day for several hours. The extreme measures went into effect when authorities learned that a 31-year-old woman who had recently visited the theme park had tested positive.
Those who had been inside the park since Thursday, as well as their children, were prevented from going to work or school and ordered to report test results for the next three days, Reuters reported.
On Monday, more than 400,000 attendees were tested for the virus and all returned negative results. A Disney spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap that the testing process was expedited and that all guests left the park. According to the city health bureau, visitors were let out of the locked gates by 8:30 p.m., but some reported not being able to leave until 10 p.m. The spokesperson said that plans to reopen the park are underway.
The shutdown was in line with China’s “zero-COVID” approach, which has seen entire cities shut down over a single reported case.
In recent weeks, temporary lockdowns have been instated in several cities across the country. On Friday, the approximately 1.3 million residents of Shanghai’s Yangpu district were given at-home testing mandates, reportedly in connection to the Shanghai Disney case.
