On Tuesday’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Meyers devoted a new “A Closer Look” segment to Donald Trump’s obsessions with Jeff Bezos and securing the U.S. border with Mexico using a show of military force.
“Now today the Trump administration announced a plan to send National Guard troops to the border, and lately Trump has been obsessed with this idea of militarizing the border, an idea he floated last week when he said the US-Mexico Border should be just as fortified as the border between North and South Korea,” Meyers said, before playing a clip from March 29 in which Trump repeatedly made a hand gesture to demonstrate what a border looks like that felt an awful lot like a one-handed version of the gesture used to describe a woman having an hourglass figure.
“What is this? I think he wants to f— the border!” Meyers exclaimed before switching into his Trump impersonation mode. “‘Have you seen the border? Oooohhhh. She is 34-24-34. Ooooohhh it’s a beautiful border. Beautiful. You gotta guard it. You gotta guard it. You need the military to guard it because people wanna f— it.’”
Meyers also played a bunch of other clips of Trump trying to hype everyone up for having the US military patrol the border, including one in which he noted that he was about to have a meeting with defense secretary James Mattis on the subject.
“Oh great, another thing for General Mattis’ to-do list. He’s already planning your dumb military parade, now you want him to guard the border. Why don’t you just combine the two and have the parade along the Mexican border?” Meyers asked. “Have you ever tried to cross the street during a parade? Immigrants would walk up to the border and be like, awww man, this is today? Ughh, bagpipes, let’s get out of here.”
Meyers then took note of one of the clips that just played, in which Trump attempted to say “We’re gonna be doing things militarily” — but “militarily” came out sounding more like “militarililer.”
“What? Was that a word or did your teeth try to escape your mouth again,” Meyers joked. “Trump is less articulate than a seven year old in the back of his mom’s sedan after dental surgery.”
