As Donald Trump continues to publicly yell at world leaders, allow Elon Musk to make massive job cuts in key federal agencies and departments, and rant on social media, Democrats continue to respond mostly with strong discouraging words. So, at this point, Seth Meyers is begging them to “show some spine.”
His latest plea came on Monday night, as the NBC host returned from a two-week break with a super-sized, two-part “A Closer Look” segment. In it, he largely focused on Trump’s hostile meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.
But Meyers also latched onto the Democrats’ response to Trump’s actions during the meeting, which included House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries saying, “It certainly is the case that we’ll need to see some mature leadership from the Trump administration.”
When host Wolf Blitzer pushed back on Jeffries, asking whether “you think there will be some mature leadership from the Trump administration,” Meyers pulled out a buzzer, furiously slamming it to weigh in.
“Oh, oh, I know this one, I know this one!” he said excitedly. “I know this one. Let me answer this: No.”
Speaking more seriously, though, Meyers turned his ire onto Democrats at large.
“What is wrong with all of you? What is wrong with you!” he asked. “You want to see some mature leadership from the Trump administration? Well, I want to see all the gold in Fort Knox. And guess what? Neither of us is getting what we f–kin’ want!”
“Seriously, Democrats, show some spine. Do you want to get primaried? Why do you guys keep acting like this is your first day on the job?” he added.
Meyers then pointed his attention at the Democrats who voted to confirm Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, especially after Rubio quietly sat in the meeting with Zelenskyy, not saying anything, instead sinking into the couch. Multiple Dems have expressed their regret on their vote, with Sen. Chris Murphy explaining that they thought Rubio might stand up to Trump.
“You thought Marco Rubio is going to stand up to Donald? There’s a better chance of Kermit standing up without a hand up his ass!” Meyers bellowed.
