The film is Potter’s sixth feature — including "Orlando" and "Rage"  — and one of the first acquired by A24.

In it, the two titular characters, Ginger (Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) — the two best friends' friendship is challenged by personal trauma and divergent interests. Ginger enjoys poetry and social activism, while Rosa is more socially mature, inclined to smoke and fool around with boys.

When Ginger’s parents’ marriage beings to disintegrate, she begins to spend more time with a gay couple (Oliver Platt and Timothy Spall) and their America friend (Annette Bening). The troubled marriage and heightened fear of a nuclear threat takes its toll.

“We’ve been fans of Sally’s for a long time. She has crafted a touching, heartfelt, and extraordinary work anchored by an absolutely incredible performance by Elle Fanning which already has a tremendous amount of love from audiences and journalists alike,” A24 said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing the film to a wide audience and showing the world one of the best performances of the year.”

Film executives Daniel Katz, John Hodges and David Fenkel founded the company in 2012 with plans to distribute eight to 10 titles a fear.

Its first acquisition was Roman Coppola’s “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles,” which stars Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzmann. That film will be released in February 2013.
