Seann William Scott, the actor known as goofball “Stifler” in the gross (but bankable) “American Pie” movies, is finally acting like a grown-up in real life.
In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it announcement by his PR flack, Scott has checked himself into a treatment facility for “health and personal” issues. Charlie Sheen, are you taking notes? This is how it should be done, Hollywood-style. Speculate all you like as to the real issues (drugs seem to be the top choice) the point is the guy was either convinced by others to do the right thing, or he came to the no-brainer conclusion all by himself.

Regardless, it’s a known factoid that Hollywood caters to whatever illicit hobby (or hobbies) one may have. And it should be also noted that the famous (and the semi-famous, like Scott) are just as liable to succumb to Tinsletown’s temptations as anyone else on the planet. Except they usually have managers, agents and enabling buddies or Goddesses to see their every whim is served. And those delusional souls may even go on a tour and soak the foolish fans who pay money to watch a human being self-destruct. Remember Freak Shows?
Of course Scott’s timing of his entry into a (what else?) possible drug treatment facility was impeccable. Especially since a day after the announcement, it was also announced he would be returning to the “American Pie” franchise, along with stars Eugene Levy and Jason Biggs.
Hmm. Do you think his entering treatment may have been a prerequisite for his return? Maybe the rehab stint isn’t such an “out-of-nowhere” announcement. Perhaps it was specifically cited in a contractual agreement, that unless Scott enters drug rehab, he can kiss goodbye the reclamation of the Stifler character. Which would probably bum out all of his fans. And most likely disappoint “American Pie” purists, if there are such a thing.
Call me a cockeyed optimist, but I’m hoping that Scott felt rehab would be a wise career move to get clean and sober and he took whatever encouragement that was out there to make it happen. Sounds like something a real-life grown-up would do.
