“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 14 queens Bosco and Daya Betty recreating looks from Emmy-nominated shows
Bosco as Nadja from “What We Do in the Shadows”
“I chose Nadja because I think ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ is the funniest scripted television show out there and I’ve watched every episode with my boyfriend,” Bosco said of recreating the look. “I also am filled with an indescribable blinding lust for Matt Berry and will do anything in my power to get him to notice and hopefully sleep with me (my boyfriend is OK with this).”
(The FX series “What We Do in the Shadows” is up for several Emmy awards this year, including Outstanding Comedy Series)
Daya Betty as Pamela Anderson from Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy”
“The Emmy-nominated Hulu series ‘Pam & Tommy’ takes a closer look into how sexism played a defining role in Hollywood throughout the 1990s; especially during the infamous Pamela Anderson sex tape scandal (portrayed by Lily James),” Daya Betty said. “I chose to highlight this series to credit the type of women that inspire me. Women who persevere through hardship. Women who don’t let others’ opinions influence the trajectory of their life. Women who are resilient. I think Pam Anderson herself said it best: ‘I’m much more than a pair of breasts…. I represent success, hard work and fun.’”
(The Hulu limited series “Pam & Tommy” is up for several Emmys this year, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Lily James and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.)
DeJa Skye as Eleven from “Stranger Things”
“El. A strong independent character who I can fully relate to. I think anyone in the queer community can relate to her, actually. Someone just trying to find their place in society and being forced to hide who they are,” DeJa Skye said. “She eventually becomes one with the power she holds and becomes a much more confident person and that’s what drag did for me. By dressing up and showing my art I was able to become one with who I am. Color really speaks to me and invokes an emotion within me so I decided to do DeJa No. 22.”
(Netflix’s “Stranger Things” is up for 13 Emmys this year, including Outstanding Drama Series.)
Orion Story as Connie from “Big Mouth”
“I chose Connie from ‘Big Mouth’ because for me, she represents coming into one’s self, confidence and sexual liberation. Lately, I’ve felt very liberated with expressing my sexual as well as gender identity, and have really fallen in love with myself again,” Orion Story said.
“I also love bubble-baffs,” she added.
(Maya Rudolph is nominated for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for voicing Connie in the Netflix animated series “Big Mouth.”)
June Jambalaya as Anna Delvey from “Inventing Anna”
“Before the Netflix series, I was not familiar with Anna Delvey or her story, but immediately after watching I became so intrigued with this young lady and the commitment she had to her character she created. No, I don’t agree with all of her decisions, but there is something so compelling [about] the lengths she went to live her fantasy…. She wasn’t letting anything stand in her way,” June Jambalaya said. “Anna rubbed elbows [with] some of the most influential socialites of fashion, art and real estate of New York City, believing she was a wealthy heiress. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Lady Gaga: The ‘lie became the truth because I believed it.’”
(Netflix’s “Inventing Anna” is up for several awards at this year’s Emmys, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.)
Lady Camden as Tina from “Bob’s Burgers”
“When asked to pick an iconic look from all the nominated actors, I thought to myself: ‘What would be the stupidest choice here?’ I’ve always felt that life would be way better if it was a cartoon and I think Lady Camden would truly thrive if it was,” Lady Camden said.
(Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers” is nominated at the Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program.)
Alyssa Hunter as Lady Gaga from the special “One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga”
“I was a child with many desires and passions who grew up locked in his room watching Lady Gaga’s music videos. Thanks to the passion for the fine arts, Gaga awakened in me the motivation to be Free. That is why I decided to recreate this wonderful Lady Gaga look with Tony Bennett because it represents a lot in my life and inspires me to be the artist that I am today,” Alyssa Hunter said. “At the same time, I loved the idea of recreating this photo that [she posed for] with Tony Bennett, because I was able to do it with my Grandfather, who supports and accepts me so much, from the beginning. Recreating this photo with my grandfather and using my favorite artist as inspiration, this photo becomes one of the most special that I have been able to take and I will keep this beautiful experience forever in my heart.”
(The special “One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga,” which aired on CBS, is up for Outstanding Variety Special.)
