RuPaul Charles and “Sex and the City” showrunner Michael Patrick King have teamed up for the Netflix comedy series “AJ and the Queen,” the streamer announced on Friday.
The “RuPaul’s Drag Race” host will star as Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990’s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway. As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better.
According to Netflix, RuPaul will also perform “a killer musical number in every drag club” along the way.
Charles and King will co-write and executive produce the hour-long comedy from MPK Productions and Warner Bros. Television. It has received a 10-episode series order.
In addition to the VH1 competition and the Netflix series, Charles has also begun developing a half-hour dramedy based on his life in 1980s New York City with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and “Power’s” Gary Lennon. It was announced on Thursday that he will also lend his voice to the animated streaming series “Drag Babies” alongside several “Drag Race” alums.
