‘Robocop’ Tops ‘Lego Movie’ in Debut as Storms Whack Box Office

MGM’s action remake is No. 1 with $2.8 million, but weather socking much of the nation looms ominously over the holiday weekend

“Robocop” knocked “The Lego Movie” out of the top spot at the domestic box office with a $2.8 million opening day Wednesday, and first-night moviegoers gave it a “B+” CinemaScore.

Warner Bros.’ animated comedy was second with $2.2 million, but the real story may be the bad weather blanketing parts of the East, South and Midwest.

“The Lego Movie” had done $3.4 million on Monday and $3.1 million Tuesday in lifting its domestic total to $77.9 million after five days. It’s projected to top MGM’s “Robocop” and repeat as No. 1 over the upcoming Presidents Day weekend.

The toy tale is projected to take in as much as $55 million over the four-day holiday period by analysts, with “Robocop” at $45 million. But if the bad weather holds or worsens, they won’t hit those numbers.

“The Lego Movie” is in 3,775 theaters while “Robocop” is in 3,372, and both are in 3D.
