Robin Williams died one year ago Tuesday at age 63, and his fans and colleagues have unleashed an outpouring of tributes on social media to mark the grim anniversary.
Williams’ death in his northern California home was deemed a suicide by the coroner, but the tributes focused on the contributions that the “Mork & Mindy” star made to the world with his comedy.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Williams’ costar in the CBS comedy “The Crazy Ones,” posted a lengthy quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of the intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the beauty in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here. This is to have succeeded,” Gellar wrote, adding, “You succeeded RW #RobinWilliams.”
Lisa Jakub, who played the daughter in the Williams film “Mrs. Doubtfire,” took to Facebook and noted, “One year ago today,” linking to an appreciation she wrote following Williams’ death.
Days before the anniversary, comedian Margaret Cho tweeted, “Our friend wrote this. I miss Robin so much. #berobin,” followed by a link to an essay by Dan Spencer titled “Life Lessons From Robin Williams: The Simple Things My Friend Taught Me.”
Comedian Patton Oswalt wrote, simply, “I miss Robin.”
John Stamos shared a memory of an early encounter with Williams, writing, “‘Dear money, send mom’ Robin Williams. The first autograph I ever got. You are missed Robin. #RobinWilliams”
Calling Williams’ death “heartbreaking,” LeAnn Rimes offered contact information for a suicide hotline for those who might find themselves in Williams’ situation.
“So heartbreaking! I’ll never forget being in his presence and laughing til my face hurt. We miss you down here. www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org 1-800-273-TALK (8255)”
