Robert Zemeckis will produce "Timeless," a time travel pitch set up at Warner Bros. that Mike Thompson will write, according to Deadline.
The potential tentpole's logline is being kept under wraps for now, but a plot description isn't necessary to throw fanboys into a tizzy at the mere mention of Zemeckis' name when time travel is involved.
The "Back to the Future" filmmaker hasn't directed a live-action movie since 2000's "Cast Away," as he's been working exclusively in the realm of 3D performance capture for the last decade.
Zemeckis will follow "The Polar Express," "Beowulf" and "A Christmas Carol" with the upcoming Beatles movie "Yellow Submarine."
According to Deadline, Zemeckis has also been circling WB's "Superman," and he's the first name I've heard that actually makes sense for that big-budget project. I mean, Darren Aronofsky … really? He's a genius, and that's precisely because he's successfully stayed away from blockbusters like "Superman." That said, the comic book property would be a hell of a return to live-action for the Oscar-winning director of "Forrest Gump."
Zemeckis' company, Image Movers, was based at Disney until the studio closed its animation facility in Marin County earlier this year.
Warner Bros. recently worked with Thompson on "Oh Happy Day," which is envisioned as a star vehicle for Johnny Depp. The studio recently hired him to perform a rewrite on "The Last Summer of You and Me" for valued producer Denise DiNovi.
Zemeckis is represented by CAA, while ICM represents Thompson.
