The CW’s live-action Archie comic book adaptation “Riverdale” has cast Molly Ringwald in a recurring capacity, the network announced Wednesday.
The 80s icon will play Mary Andrews, mother of Archie (KJ Apa) in at least two episodes this season.
Having left Riverdale two years ago to follow her dreams, Mary comes back to town in her family’s hour of need. She not only reconnects with Archie and her husband, Fred (Luke Perry), but also her former high school gal-pals Hermione and Alice, just in time for a Homecoming Dance.
“Riverdale” is set in the present day and is based on the iconic Archie Comics characters. It is described as a surprising and subversive take on Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writes and executive produces along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater.
Ringwald is co-repped by Sue Leibman/Barking Dog Entertainment and Untitled Entertainment
“Riverdale” premieres Thursday, Jan. 29 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
