Rihanna and Drake dominated the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards nominees, leading the pack with 5 nominations apiece.
Rihanna was cited for her work on the video "We Found Love" and for her collaborations with Coldplay on "Princess of China" and Drake on "Take Care."
Also attracting attention from the annual music video celebration was Katy Perry, a MTV awards staple who continued to show strength with four nominations for her hit single "Wide Awake" and "Part of Me."
There was also room for Fun and their ubiquitous summer single "We Are Young," as well as the latest object of tween affection, One Direction. Frank Ocean, the R&B singer who made headlines by coming out of the closet earlier this month, picked up three nominations for his anthem "Swim Good."
Competing in the video of the year category, the night's top prize, are Katy Perry ("Wide Awake"), Gotye ("Somebody That I Used To Know"), Rihanna ("We Found Love"), Drake ("Take Care") and M.I.A. ("Bad Guys").
Starting Tuesday the public can vote for certain categories by visiting vma.mtv.com. This year's show features performances from many of the nominees and airs on September 6 at 8 p.m. EST from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
