Ricky Gervais on the Golden Globes: ‘They Don’t Know What I’m Gonna Say’ (Video)

"I might even really be drunk," the Globes host jokes

Will he be a kinder, gentler Golden Globes host, or will he come out with "his freaking guns blazing," as Matt Lauer put it?

Ricky Gervais, who makes his third appearance as Golden Globes host on Jan. 15, left no doubt about which route he'll take, during a "Today" chat with Lauer on Friday.

"The controversy is irrelevant to me. That's people's opinions outside my jokes," Gervais said. "I do it my way. I get final edit on everything. And they don't know what I'm gonna say. And they won't know what I'm gonna say until I say it."

Besides, the creator of the original U.K. version of "The Office" told Lauer, he still doesn't understand why certain celebs were so ticked off by his 2011 Globes hosting performance.

"I don't know what I did wrong, really. What did I say that was untrue? I made a joke suggesting that Charlie Sheen might like a night out. I said that Robert Downey Jr. spent some time in clinics. And he did. I'm not judging him by that;  it's a joke."
