Morning zoo radio shows love mocking celebrities with sarcastic jokes and gag tracks, but what happens when one of those stars has had enough?
On Friday morning, rapper Birdman was scheduled to do an interview in Los Angeles for Power 105.1’s Breakfast Club show. Instead, he stormed in with an entourage and blew up at hosts Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God.
“Stop playin’ with my name … Put some respeck on my name,” he rumbled, pronouncing ‘respect’ exactly as spelled.
Birdman never made it clear during his rant exactly what he was so mad about. When the hosts tried to ask for an explanation, Birdman simply said, “I wanted to look you right in the face like a man and tell you how I feel.”
Some speculate that it might be all the jokes Charlamagne, arguably the biggest troll on L.A. radio, made at his expense. Others suggest it might be because of an interview the show did a year ago with Trick Daddy, who spent the interview calling Birdman “fake” and trash talking him while the hosts laughed along. Whatever the reason, Charlamagne wasn’t fazed by Birdman in the slightest.
“Did you pull up on [Rick] Ross that way, or Trick Daddy?” Charlamagne asked casually. “I’m the radio guy! Don’t pull up on the radio guy!”
As soon as the host said that, Birdman made his exit, ending the segment about 42 minutes early. Not long after that, Twitter got a hold of the incident, and the memes came flooding in. Crying Jordan, Aretha Franklin, and “South Park” were brought out of the Internet joke toolbox to lampoon the rapper’s demands for “RESPECK.”
