“Raiders of the Lost Ark” returns to theaters this weekend, in a big way.
The 1981 adventure film classic directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford is back for a special one-week run on 267 giant Imax screens across North America, beginning Friday.
Paramount has timed the re-release to coincide with the debut of its “Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures” on Blu-ray on Sept. 18.

Sales have been steady for “Raiders,” according to online movie ticket service Fandango.
Spielberg, who was involved with the Imax conversion, has said in interviews that the look of the film and the special effects remain unchanged, but that the audio has been enhanced to surround sound. Spielberg also said he had no plans to do Imax conversions of the other “Indiana Jones” films or any of his other movies.
He is converting his “Jurassic Park” to 3D for a rerelease next year.
Karen Allen co-starred in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which George Lucas executive produced.
