“New Girl” fans remember Prince’s cameo on the popular sitcom, but little do they know that he vetoed a Kardashian appearance – unfortunately, his request came a little too late.
When Zooey Deschanel was a guest on “Conan” on Monday night, she explained how the late singer, who died in April at the age of 57, came to be on the show.
“I got an email from his manager saying that he liked watching the show and wanted to come on,” she said. “I was definitely more than surprised, I didn’t picture him watching a sitcom, let alone my sitcom!”
She then reminisced about the 2014 episode of “New Girl,” in which Prince throws a party at his house. Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner came to the set to be guests at the party, but the crew heard too late that Prince didn’t want the Kardashians in the scene.
“I get there the day Prince is supposed to arrive and I’m studying my lines and one of the PAs comes in and she’s like, ‘I need to take all of the sides, the scripts,’” Deschanel told Conan. “I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ I walk outside, and she has, like, a bonfire. She’s burning all the scripts and the call sheets.”
Deschanel added, “It turns out that someone from Prince’s camp said, ‘Who are the celebrities? I hope it’s not a Kardashian.’
So in an attempt to salvage the situation, the crew had the two Kardashians shoot the scene and leave the set quickly so Prince wouldn’t see them.
“I felt so bad because obviously everyone had gone out of their way to be there on that day,” Deschanel said. “But Prince was running the show, so…”
The “Purple Rain” singer famously kicked Kim Kardashian off his stage during a 2011 concert at Madison Square Garden. A video of that moment gained new popularity following Prince’s death.
