President Obama, Mitt Romney to Appear on CMT Awards

Leader of the Free World Barack Obama and his presumed political opponent, Mitt Romney, contribute cameos to comedic opening segment on music awards show

President Obama and Mitt Romney will have their big showdown at the nation's polling places in November — but in the meantime they'll enjoy a few laughs together.

This will mark Obama's second run on the CMT Awards. In 2008, then-candidate Obama and his political opponents, John McCain and Hilary Clinton, taped cameos for the opening segment of the show.

According to CMT, both Obama and Romney immediately accepted the opportunity.

“The President and Governor Romney each understand the reach of the CMT audience, particularly on our highest-rated night of the year,” CMT president Brian Philips said. “They’re each great sports, they’re ‘in on the joke’, and they each went out of their way to deliver great moments for CMT. Tune in at the top of the show or you’ll miss them!”

Both candidates have tested their comedic chops in a televised setting — Romney has made two appearances on  "The Late Show With David Letterman" in recent months to read the Top 10 list, while Obama slow-jammed the headlines on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" in April.

Time will tell which candidate delivers the funniest cameo — and whether the segment will be as big a joke as modern politics have become.

The "CMT Music Awards," hosted by Toby Keith and Kristen Bell, air Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on CMT and CMT.com.
