Captain Jack is back, and based on midnight showings, the latest addition to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise should have the year's biggest opening to date.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" grossed $4.7 million in 2,000 locations during its midnight showings, according to studio estimates.
In comparison, fellow blockbusters "Fast Five" and "Thor" banked $3.7 million and $3.3 million respectively in their own late night engagements.
Filmed at a cost of $200 million, "Pirates" is on track to gross between $90 to $105 million over the weekend. That's softer than the $114 million that the previous installment, "At World's End," grossed in its opening frame four years ago.
Look for Disney to be disappointed if the venerable franchise fails to crack the $100 million mark over the next three days.
