South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg appeared on CNN Wednesday morning, just hours after his performance in the network’s Democratic debate drew a lot of attention … to a smudge on his forehead.
“Our best guess is there were these little kind of gnats around,” he told New Day anchor Alisyn Camerota. “Maybe I smushed one and it got on my forehead? I don’t know. I didn’t know about it until after; that’s the thing about having something on your forehead.”
He added that he hoped it didn’t distract from delivering “the message about what’s at stake” in the election.

Across Twitter Tuesday night, viewers posted evidence that it did seem to distract them. “Has Buttigieg always had that thing on his forehead,” wondered one user.
Another wrote of the forehead smudge, it “is the only thing I, a voting citizen, care about and no one is addressing it.”
