Epix is out with the first teaser-trailer for its upcoming Batman prequel series “Pennyworth,” offering a closer look at the younger years of the Caped Crusader’s famous right-hand man, Alfred.
The 10-episode crime drama will follow Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), a former British SAS soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London.
Featuring a ticking clock, a flashing knife and a whole lot of British opulence, the teaser introduces a suave-looking Pennyworth in foggy London. Starring Bannon, Aldridge, Paloma Faith, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett, Ryan Fletcher, Jason Flemyng and Polly Walker, “Pennyworth” premieres this summer.
“Gotham” veterans Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon are executive producing. The series comes from Warner Horizon Scripted Television and is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. Production is currently underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, in the UK.
With the Fox series “Gotham” ending in April, fans might expect a crossover between the two prequel shows — but TheWrap previously reported that won’t be the case. “They’re different shows … I think these things do stand alone,” Cannon said at February’s Television Critics Association press tour. He was echoed by Heller: “It’s very much not a companion piece to ‘Gotham.’”
