In honor of the Fourth of July holiday, Sean Penn declared his independence from simmering gravitas at Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford’s Malibu clubhouse.
True to the vacation vibe of the week, the 7:30 P.M. party at Gerber's Café Habana was still hopping as the 2:00 a.m. closing time approached early Friday morning.
Give John Corbett part of the credit. The actor (center, with Lisa Rinna and Fran Drescher) put on his dancing shoes for the DJ’s spin of “PYT”.
Penn, a Malibu regular, rolled with an eclectic posse, holding down prime central real estate in a guy huddle with Rick Rubin (top right) and former NHL star Chris Chelios at the cafe, infused for the night with a Puerto Rican theme to tie in with Gerber’s other current pursuit, the Caliche Rum line.
Others jumping the gun on the well-calendared independence day “week” were new parents Jen and Ben Silverman, Gigi Grazer, and Thea Andrews.
Hollywood on “Summer Hours”
With many on an official – or unofficial – summer Friday schedule, a few of the “out of offices” on Friday afternoon were from those at spirited stylist Jessica Paster’s JustFab poolside soiree in Larchmont.
At left, Jared “Just Jared” Eng, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Paster, one of Tatum’s pals, and Ellie Kemper were among those nibbling on Pink Taco fare amidst beauty treatment and shoe freebies.
Teen couple Ariel Winter and boyfriend Cameron Palatas (MTV’s forthcoming “Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous”) made their moms their "plus-ones," with both moms driving together in a separate car.
Wayne Rooney Toasting the BET Awards
On Saturday, it was the same game plan as the fashionable JustFab crew for a different demographic as music industry executive Kevin Liles hosted his 2nd annual BET Awards poolside party.

Amongst Nene Leakes, Estelle, and Timbaland in the multi-level resort-style spread, someone else was turning heads: English football star Wayne Rooney.
Instead of starring in Sunday’s global telecast of the Euro Cup soccer tournament final, Rooney and wife Coleen were in the crowd “toasting black excellence” at the Grey Goose Cherry Noir-sponsored pre-party in a party house high above Cahuenga.
After England’s disappointing showing in the just-concluded tournament, the Rooneys' L.A. vacation has been closely monitored in the press, including Piers Morgan, who spilled a Twitter play-by-play of their dinner together at Soho House this past Friday.
“Does this picture make me look straight?”
Producer Dan Bucatinsky (center) drew a credit-block of talent to participate in the live reading of his book “Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight? Confessions of a Gay Dad,” aloud at CAA on June 26.
Bucatinsky, Lisa Kudrow’s producing partner, was thronged by past and future colleagues at Brancott Estate Wine’s pre-reception: Mary McCormack, Melissa Etheridge, Molly Shannon, Minnie Driver, and Sandra Oh.
