Participant Media said Tuesday that it has acquired all North American rights to "Chavez," a biopic about the famed labor organizer.
The film is directed by "Y Tu Mama Tambien" star Diego Luna and stars Michael Peña ("Crash") as Cesar Chavez. Currently filming in Mexico, it focuses on the non-violent protests Chavez led to ensure better rights for California farm workers.
Luna's "Y Tu Mama Tambien" costar Gael Garcia Bernal will play a cameo role in the film and John Malkovich will portray one of Chavez’s key adversaries. Also rounding out the cast are America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson and Wes Bentley.
Keir Pearson ("Hotel Rwanda") wrote the screenplay for the project.
Although best known as an actor in films like "Milk" and "The Terminal," Luna previously directed "Abel," a 2010 coming of age drama.
