“Anora” got its happily ever after. The indie about a sex worker from Brooklyn won five Oscars, including Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Picture and Best Director for Sean Baker, who matched Walt Disney’s record for winning four Academy Awards in one night.
An early indication that the night would swing “Anora’s” way came when it won Original Screenplay, beating “A Real Pain,” which many prognosticators had placed their bets on, and then picking up Best Editing. Those both went to Baker who, in the final stretch, also won director and picture, cementing his place alongside Disney in the history books. By the time Best Actress was announced and Madison beat the sentimental favorite Demi Moore (for “The Substance”), there was little mystery as to whether “Anora” would take Best Picture. In all, it won five of its six nominations, losing only supporting actor, which went, as expected, to Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain.”

Supporting Actor was the show’s first category to be announced, and Culkin managed to one-up his Emmy acceptance speech when he stood on stage and proclaimed to his wife (seated in the audience) that he wanted a third child — by telling her he wanted a fourth.
Another category that went as predicted: Zoe Saldaña bagging supporting actress for “Emilia Pérez,” one of just two awards that the film won, despite racking up the most nominations (13). Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its Best Picture frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced last month, and it even lost international feature to Brazilian auteur Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here.” (And yes, Gascón was in attendance and did get a shout-out from host Conan O’Brien, who absolutely killed throughout the show.) The only other award “Emilia Pérez” won was Original Song for “El Mal.”
Adrien Brody won his second Best Actor Oscar, for “The Brutalist,” which ended up winning three of its 10 nominations. In addition to lead actor, it won cinematography and score. Despite what looked like a late-stage surge after the BAFTAs and SAG, “Conclave” took home just one statuette, for Adapted Screenplay.
“Wicked” also went into the evening with 10 nominations, and left with two wins: costume design and production design. When Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win costume design, he earned the first standing ovation of the night. “The Substance” won Makeup and Hairstyling, “No Other Land” won doc feature (despite still not being picked up by a U.S. distributor), and in an upset, animated feature went not to “The Wild Robot” as expected, but to “Flow,” which marked Latvia’s first ever Oscar win.
