Despite winning an Oscar on Sunday night, Sam Smith just can’t seem to catch a break.
Smith erroneously claimed that he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, something that “Milk” screenwriter, Oscar winner and LGBT activist Dustin Lance Black was only too happy to correct.
“Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé,” Black tweeted Sunday night, along with a video of his own Oscars acceptance speech. Black is engaged to Olympian Tom Daley.
Black followed up with another tweet saying, “THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us.”
But Black was not the only one upset with Smith on Sunday. Many were shocked when Smith’s song, “Writing’s on the Wall” from “Spectre,” beat out Lady Gaga‘s “Til It Happens to You,” from campus rape documentary “The Hunting Ground,” for Best Original Song.
