Bette Midler graced the stage to sing “Wind Beneath My Wings” as part of the Academy’s annual “In Memoriam” honoring those who Hollywood has lost this past year.

Although Midler has been nominated for two Academy Awards, the performance marked her first at the Oscars. While the song first surfaced in 1982, it was Midler’s version for the 1998 film “Beaches” that topped the charts and boosted the tune into national consciousness.

Midler was the only performer of the night who did not sing a song that was one of this year’s Best Original Song nominees. Other musical acts included Pharrell, U2, Karen O and Idina Menzel.
