Natalie Portman embroidered her Dior cape with the names of the female directors not nominated for an Oscar at the ceremony this year.
Los Angeles Times journalist Amy Kaufman tweeted video showing that Portman’s outfit bore the names of Lulu Wang, Greta Gerwig, Lorene Scafaria, Marielle Heller, Alma Har’el and Mari Diop, and others.
“I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in a subtle way,” she explained.
For the second straight year, female directors were shut out of the Directing category at the Academy Awards. This prompted major backlash when the nominees announced last month.
Nominated in the category are Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Todd Phillips for “Joker,” Sam Mendes for “1917,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” and Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite.”
Alma Har’el, who was snubbed for her film “Honey Boy,” tweeted, “My first time at the #Oscars couldn’t have been more beautiful.”
