One Direction stripped their sound down to classroom instruments to sing a Christmas classic with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots on Tuesday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show” on NBC.
The British boy band took on “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” sharing the lead with Fallon and spotlighting perhaps more classroom instruments than have yet been seen on this recurring segment. They tackled the more rock-and-roll version of the song, taking turns on the lead and even allowing Fallon a silly falsetto toward the end.
In the tradition of the season, the band donned colorful and “ugly” Christmas sweaters for the impromptu performance. And while it didn’t sound quite ready for release as a holiday single, it did look like more fun than 14 men should be allowed to have in a tiny, decorated room.
Coming off an appearance as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend, One Direction is hot off their record-setting debut of their fourth studio album, “Four.” The UK “X Factor” contestants became the first group to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with their first four albums.
