An Ohio news anchor referred to Lady Gaga‘s repertoire of songs as “jigaboo music” on the air Monday morning.
Kristi Capel of Fox 8 was doing a segment on the pop star’s tribute to “The Sound of Music” during Sunday’s Academy Awards when she complimented the quality of the “Bad Romance” singer’s voice, but added it has been hard to hear Gaga’s voice in the past because of all the “jigaboo music that she does.”
In a since-deleted tweet, Capel apologized if she offended anyone for using the slang term once used to describe a black person, and explained that she “didn’t know the meaning behind [jigaboo] or that it was even a word.”
Still, Twitter users expressed their outrage, stating that ignorance of the word’s meaning is no excuse.

she thinks a copy/paste apology and not knowing it’s a real word is enough!!! @Kristi_Capel
@Kristi_Capel @LocsWithoutKeys Perhaps you should refrain from using any word you didn’t know “was even a word” when on air?

@Kristi_Capel@LocsWithoutKeys You realize that apologizing that someone got offended is not the same as apologizing for being offensive….
