Norman Jewison, Oscar-Nominated Director of ‘In the Heat of the Night,’ Dies at 97

Jewison also directed “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Moonstruck”

Director Norman Jewison, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated “In the Heat of the Night” and “Moonstruck,” has died at the age of 97. The director died peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 20, 2024.

Jewison was a groundbreaking. filmmaker who amassed seven Academy Award nominations throughout his career. He was nominated three times for Best Director for the Sidney Poitier-starring “In the Heat of the Night,” the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” and the Cher-starring “Moonstruck.” He also secured Best Picture nominations for his 1967 feature “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “A Soldier’s Story” and “Moonstruck.”
