Nina Simone sings a song mourning the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the first trailer for Netflix documentary “What Happened, Miss Simone?”
In this exclusive video (above), archival footage featuring protesters clashing with police and other images are laid over Simone singing “Why (The King of Love is Dead),” recorded at the Westbury Music Fair on Apr. 7, 1968, just three days after King was killed.
The film chronicles Simone’s revelatory music, a political passion born of the civil rights movement that grew angrier and more violent, and a life-long struggle with mental illness.
“What Happened, Miss Simone?” was recently nominated for a 2016 Academy Award in the Best Documentary Feature category.
The doc is now streaming on Netflix.
