Universal Pictures is turning to Eric Heisserer, who penned the studio's remake of "The Thing," to write "Bird Box," an adaptation of Josh Malerman's manuscript that will be directed by Andy Muschietti ("Mama"), TheWrap has learned.
Scott Stuber and Chris Morgan are producing with Barbara Muschietti, while Ryan Lewis will executive produce. Michael Clear, who serves as director of development at Stuber's Bluegrass Films banner, brought the project into the company and will oversee on its behalf. Universal execs Jon Mone and Jay Polidoro will oversee on behalf of the studio.
Described as being in the vein of "Children of Men" and "The Others," story reportedly follows a woman and two children who make their way down a river in a post-apocalyptic setting.
Malerman is the frontman for the rock band The High Strung. His book, which hits stores next year, was bought at auction for six figures last year by Ecco, which is an imprint of HarperCollins. Universal optioned the rights in February 2013.
Heisserer, who is in negotiations to tackle "Bird Box," previously penned the remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Final Destination 5" for New Line. He recently directed the Paul Walker thriller "Hours" and his script "Story of Your Life" is in development at FilmNation, 21 Laps Entertainment and Lava Bear Films.
