Nicole Kidman is just one of the many new faces making Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss)’s life more complicated in the first trailer for “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” the follow-up to the critically acclaimed limited noir series by Jane Campion.
In “China Girl,” Griffin is still reeling from giving up her daughter Mary (Alice Englert) for adoption at birth, although she is trying to reconnect with her. In the trailer, it’s revealed Kidman is playing Mary’s adoptive mother.
Griffin’s next case involves the body of an Asian girl that is discovered in a suitcase that washes up on a beach. To make things even more disturbing and complicated, it looks like Mary’s boyfriend (David Dencik) might have something to do with it.
Either way he’s probably not the kind of person you want to bring home to meet the folks, since he says things like, “The destiny of man is to enslave women.”
Helping out in the case is Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth from “Game of Thrones”). We’ll see how this seedy investigation, which includes an underground brothel, affects the already torn Detective Griffin.
The new limited series will premiere in September 2017 on SundanceTV, with episodes airing the next day on Hulu.
