The horse race for “Spider-Man” is over, with 19-year-old Tom Holland winning custody of Marvel’s flagship superhero costume — and it looks like he may have used Instagram to land the job.
A shortlist of heatseeking up-and-comers was in contention to play Peter Parker, as TheWrap exclusively reported, with Holland besting the likes of Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Timothee Chalamet and Liam James.
Holland’s competitive edge may have been the impressive amateur stunt work he posted to social media, as months of clips feature “The Impossible” star performing crazy flips, jumps, Parkour-level street tricks and various action sports on Instagram.
“For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.” said Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, upon announcement.
Speculation is high that Holland will first appear as Spider-Man in Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” before heading off to lead a standalone film directed by Jon Watts. Check out Holland’s moves below for an idea of why he edged out the competition.
