The Backstreet Boys were “incomplete” as they came to perform a sing-along on the finale of Neil Patrick Harris‘ “Best Time Ever,” but luckily, the host was there to fill in.
With Nick Carter absent (“Nick says he’s sorry, he’s busy putting on his dance pants tonight”), the boys whipped out an extra microphone for their NBC host before jumping into a choreographed rendition of their 1999 hit, “I Want it That Way” for the show’s “Sing-along Live” segment.
Throughout the performance, the camera jumped to Skype sessions of fans singing along to the song, earning $1,000 when filling in the correct missing lyric. All in all, three groups win, although one woman rather texted on her phone than playing along.
“I think there must be some Skype thing that’s not working, so we’re going to give you $1,000 anyway!” said Harris.
Kevin Richardson, A.J. McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and the band’s newest member danced across the stage, with guest announcer Kelsey Grammer busting out a move as well.
“Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
