Neil Patrick Harris Returning to Broadway in ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’

Show will premiere in spring 2014

Fresh from a well-received stint as host of the Tony Awards, Neil Patrick Harris will return to Broadway in a revival of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."

The show will premiere in the Spring of 2014, and marks the Great White Way debut of the rock musical.

The remaining creative team members, additional casting and the theater will be confirmed at a later date.

Harris will don heels and wig as the titular East German transgender singer.

"It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the journey," Harris said in a statement.

The show will be produced on Broadway by David Binder and Jayne Baron Sherman. 101 Productions, Ltd are the executive producers.

Harris currently stars as the skirt-chasing Barney Stinson in the hit CBS television series, “How I Met Your Mother." Though best known for his small screen work, he is no stranger to the stage.

He most recently tackled the leading role of Bobby in the New York Philharmonic’s concert version of Stephen Sondheim‘s "Company." He has also starred in three Broadway productions, including the dual role of The Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in the Tony Award-winning production of "Assassins."He also appeared in "Proof" and "Cabaret."

"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" first premiered Off-Broadway in 1998 and was made into a 2001 film of the same name.

John Cameron Mitchell who wrote the book and starred in the original stage and film productions of the show gave his blessing on the passing of the flame. 

“Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?" Mitchell said in a statement.
