“Nashville” has been cancelled by ABC and will not return for Season 5, TheWrap has learned.

The country music drama, starring Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton, was one of the few veteran ABC series that remained on the bubble after the network handed out 15 early renewals in March.

Previously, “My So-Called Life” producers Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick were named new showrunners of “Nashville” for a potential fifth season, replacing departing showrunner Dee Johnson if the show were to be renewed.

The show’s ratings slipped to an all-time series low with the fall finale, pulling a 0.8 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, and delivered a new rock-bottom 4.137 million total viewers, per Nielsen’s live-plus-same-day data.

The news comes ahead of ABC’s May 17 upfronts event, where the network will officially announce its new fall schedule, including which shows will be renewed for another season and which pilots will go to series.
