Things got heated in congress this week, as Nancy Mace responded to criticism by Jasmine Crockett with an offer to “take it outside.” And, for the hosts of “The View,” it was simply a clown show.
The moment came during a discussion of civil and transgender rights, in which Crockett called Mace out for targeting trans people once again. “I can see that somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now. So [Mace] is gonna keep saying ‘trans, trans, trans, trans’ so that people will feel threatened, and child, listen —” Crockett said.
But Mace took heavy offense, cutting Crockett off and yelling “I am no child, do not call me a child, I am no child.” As committee chair James Comer, R-Ky. attempted unsuccessfully to call for order, Mace suggested she and Crockett “take it outside.”
“Sounds like ‘The View’ sometimes, I’ll tell ya,” Behar joked, watching the clip, which you can also do above.
But both Sara Haines and Whoopi Goldberg were quick to dispute that, with Haines noting “We have never taken it outside,” while Whoopi added “that’s what people would like to think.”
Both women were also quick to note that Crockett likely wasn’t actually calling Mace a child, but speaking colloquially. Whoopi suspected Mace definitely knew that, but decided to cause a problem anyway.
“What got me is that she was talking about it with big crosses in her ears. And something tells me this is not what Jesus would do in this situation,” Haines joked.
Host Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in that she “briefly had high hopes” for Mace when she was first elected, but has since given those up.
“She became this very different figure, sort of like an aspiring influencer, celebrity type,” Farah Griffin asserted. “And I just feel like there’s a reason so many people tune out politics and just throw up their hands, because it looks like a clown show! It looks like it’s more about some moment to get on TV, and to get talked about…”
Behar readily agreed, pulling out a statistic to back up that thought.
“She in particular is very interested in being on television. I’ll just say this one thing, according to FEC filings, she spent $165,000 for the sole purpose of getting on television last campaign season. She just wants to be on TV. Nancy, come on this show.”
“I would love for her to come on this show,” Sunny Hostin agreed. (Both seemed to forget that Mace actually has been on “The View” before — it ended in a heated argument between her and Whoopi about abortion rights).
“This was so uncivilized, and so wild. And the trope of the angry Black woman is used so often, and I wonder where the trope of the angry white woman is,” Hostin added.
“Because I’d like to see her, for asking a Black woman to ‘Meet me outside’ or ‘Catch me outside,’ called an angry white woman. So let it just be clear, this was never about qualifications, this was never about DEI. We all know what this was about.”
“The View” airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
