The hosts of “Morning Joe” think that Republicans have hit a new low point for the party in the midst of Herschel Walker’s ongoing abortion scandal. According to Joe Scarborough, this is even worse for the party than Donald Trump getting caught on a hot mic talking about inappropriately grabbing women.
Last week, The Daily Beast reported that Walker, who has been vocally anti-abortion, paid for a girlfriend’s abortion in 2009, including images from the woman of a “Get Well” card Walker reportedly sent along with his check covering the expenses. Later in the week, it was reported again by The Daily Beast that the woman leveling the accusations did actually have a child with Herschel Walker in 2011 — though he reportedly encouraged her to have an abortion then, too. Throughout the saga, Walker has denied the reports as “flat-out” and “defamatory” lies, threatening legal action.
But now, Walker’s campaign team has acknowledged to NBC News that Walker’s wife has indeed been in contact with the woman, Walker himself knows who the woman is, and that he has admitted to having a child with her. Still, Walker has raised $500,000 in the fallout of the scandal, and continues to gain conservative support.
“This really is the Republican party at its at its lowest point, I think even more than the Access Hollywood tape,” Joe Scarborough said Monday morning.
He took particular issue with the fact that Senators Rick Scott and Tom Cotton have now announced that they’ll be traveling to help Walker campaign in the fallout of the scandal, with Scott saying in a statement: “They picked the wrong Georgian to mess with. I am proud to stand with Herschel Walker and make sure Georgians know that he will always fight to protect them from the forces trying to destroy Georgia values.”
Scarborough denounced the endorsement.
“For the people of Georgia, listen up: Rick Scott just said that Georgia values is holding a gun to a woman’s head and saying you’re gonna pull the trigger and kill her. That’s what Rick Scott says,” Scarborough said. “Rick Scott says Georgia values is having four children, that you abandon. Four children that you do not raise — four that we know so far. Four that you do not raise. He says that Georgia values are lying.”
