NBC has ordered “Champions” to series. The show hails from Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy, who will write and executive produce. Kaling will also guest star on the 2017-18 show as Priya, an old high school fling of charismatic but lazy gym owner Vince (Anders Holm).
Vince lives with his younger brother Michael, a gorgeous idiot, per NBC’s official description. Their simple life of women and working out is put on hold when Vince’s teenage son is dropped off on their doorstep by Priya.
The cast also includes Andy Favreau, J.J. Totah, Mouzam Makkar and Nina Wadia. Michael Alan Spiller will direct and executive produce; Howard Klein also executive produces. “Champions” is produced by Universal Television, 3 Arts Entertainment, Eyes Up Productions and Kaling International.
NBC has also picked up several other new series including “Good Girls,” “AP Bio,” “Rise” sci-fi drama “Reverie” and “The Brave,” previously titled “For God and Country.”
Among current series, NBC renewed “Great News,” which joins “The Blacklist,” “Blindspot,” “Taken” and three of four of Dick Wolf’s “Chicago” shows. On the flip side, the network has canceled “Timeless,” “Emerald City,” “The Blacklist: Redemption” and “Powerless.”
For musical fans, the network will be adapting the classic “Jesus Christ Superstar” for a live musical on Easter 2018.
