"Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus is attached to topline a big-screen adaptation of Lisa McMann’s young-adult paranormal thriller novel "Wake," according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Christopher Landon ("Disturbia") will adapt the New York Times best-seller for Paramount and MTV Films.
The three-novel series follows a 17-year-old girl with the unique ability to be pulled into people’s dreams, where she sometimes sees things she’d rather not see. When she’s pulled into someone’s nightmare, she goes from witness to participant.
I’d be shocked if the anticipation for "Inception" didn’t somehow play a part in this deal, as Christopher Nolan’s upcoming thriller also involves people who are able to enter others’ dreams. For some reason, the plot description also makes me think of Tarsem’s "The Cell," which starred Jennifer Lopez as a psychotherapist entering the mind of a vicious serial killer, as well as "Brainscan," which found Edward Furlong playing an interactive, dream-like videogame with dangerous consequences.
The book’s sequels, "Fade" and "Gone," find the girl and her boyfriend investigating their teachers and learning more about the fate that awaits her. Can you smell a franchise, because I sure can.
The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lindsay Williams will produce with "Paranormal Activity" producers Jason Blum and Steven Schneider, as well as Jodi Zuckerman and Tish Cyrus of Hope Town Entertainment. The producer deals are still being finalized. Gotham Group’s Eddie Gamarra will exec produce, while Paramount exec Ashley Brucks will oversee the project for the studio.
Cyrus recently starred in "The Last Song," and previously voiced the lead role in Disney’s "Bolt." She is represented by CAA.
