Michigan State quickly became a top Twitter trend Friday afternoon — and not for good reasons.

The Spartans were a No. 2 seeded team in the NCAA men’s tournament and one of the top picks to win it all — until they lost to No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee in their first game, that is.

The stunning 90-81 defeat, which didn’t see Michigan State taking the lead at any point, knocked national player of the year candidate Denzel Valentine out of the tournament in the first round, and caused millions of fans’ brackets to implode.

According to a tweet from ESPN, 61.8 percent of ESPN Fantasy brackets picked Michigan State in their Final Four. 22.3 percent picked the Spartans to win it all.

Even more shockingly, after Temple also lost, only three perfect brackets remained less out of the 13 million entered, just 30 hours after the tournament tipped off Thursday morning.

With many sports analysts calling the Midwest Region shocker the one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, heartbroken fans were quick to share their remorse on social media. Of course, there were also those who responded with hilariously mean memes as well.
